Lantana clearing is one of our core services — we clear residential acreage, rural blocks, council reserves, fire-break lines, easements and pasture reclamation projects from Brisbane through Moreton Bay, the Sunshine Coast and the Somerset Region.

Every job starts with a free on-site inspection. We assess density, slope, access and any standing timber, then quote a fixed per-acre rate or a wet-hire day rate — whichever gives you the best value. All work is carried out with low-hour CAT machinery operated by fully insured, experienced operators.

Why Lantana Is An Invasive Weed

Lantana camara is one of Australia's ten Weeds of National Significance. Introduced as an ornamental in the 1840s, it now infests more than 4 million hectares of eastern Australia and is a legally declared invasive species in Queensland under the Biosecurity Act 2014.

Left alone, a single lantana plant becomes a 3-metre thicket in two seasons. It spreads by seed (birds, water, machinery) and by layering — every branch that touches the ground can root and form a new plant. On a typical SEQ acreage block, mature lantana can put down over 100 stems per square metre, forming a wall so dense that native regeneration stops completely.

• Chokes native vegetation — smothers young trees, blocks light, prevents native seedlings from establishing.
• Toxic to livestock — poisonous to cattle, sheep and horses (photosensitisation, liver damage).
• Harbours pests — cane toads, feral pigs, foxes and rabbits shelter in lantana thickets.
• Devalues property — heavily infested land is difficult to sell and can trigger council clearance orders.

Environmental & Fire Risks

Lantana is one of the highest-risk fuel loads in the SEQ landscape. Dead lantana holds onto its dry leaf litter for years, forming a continuous ladder of fuel from ground level up into the tree canopy. In summer bushfire conditions, an untreated lantana block can turn a low-intensity ground fire into a canopy fire in minutes.

For rural properties, RFS-designated fire-break lines require lantana to be cleared and maintained each year. For semi-rural and residential blocks bordering bushland — common right across the Somerset Region, the Sunshine Coast hinterland, and Moreton Bay's rural residential belt — clearing lantana is one of the single highest-impact things you can do to reduce your fire risk.

Beyond fire, lantana displaces the native mid-storey that koalas, gliders, wallabies and small birds depend on. Restoring lantana-infested land is a genuine environmental gain, not just a property-value gain.

Forestry Mulching vs Manual Removal

Manual clearing (brush-cutters, chainsaws, chippers, hand-drag piles) still has a place — inside protected wetlands, koala habitat, tight residential yards, or any site where machinery access is restricted. Everywhere else, forestry mulching wins on every metric.

A two-person hand crew with a chipper clears roughly 0.03–0.05 acres per hour in medium-density lantana. A single CAT 299D3 XE clears 0.25–0.4 acres per hour. The economics only work one way past the 1-acre mark: mulching is dramatically cheaper per acre, faster overall, and produces a far cleaner finish because the mulch layer stays down and suppresses the seed bank.

The other manual pitfall is safety. Mature lantana thickets in SEQ are prime habitat for eastern brown snakes, red-bellied blacks, ticks and paralysis ticks. We work with steel-tracked machinery from an air-conditioned, sealed and pressurised cab — the operator never has to enter the thicket on foot.

Excavator-Assisted Clearing

When your block has lantana and standing timber over 400mm DBH — or when you want the root ball fully removed for pasture, dam construction or a future building pad — the CAT 320 20-tonne excavator is brought in alongside the skid steer.

The excavator can push over larger trees, extract root balls, and stack green waste for later mulching or cart-away. Paired with the 299D3 XE handling the lantana, we cover mixed sites in a single mobilisation instead of two — which lowers the per-acre cost significantly for the client.

Land Rehabilitation After Clearing

Removing lantana is only half the job — what happens in the following 12 months determines whether the block stays clear. Our standard rehabilitation approach is:

1. Mulch in autumn or early winter when lantana is sending energy down into the root crown.
2. Leave the mulch layer in place — 50–150mm depth suppresses regrowth and seedlings.
3. Follow up at 8–12 weeks with a spot-spray of glyphosate (10%) or fluroxypyr on emerging shoots.
4. Seed with pasture or native mix once regrowth is suppressed — a competitive ground cover is the long-term fix.
5. Repeat spot-spray at 12 months. Two cycles typically achieve >95% kill.

For pasture reclamation clients, we can level and prep the block after mulching using the 320 excavator and skid-steer laser leveller — ready for seeding in a single mobilisation.
